Task
A residential building with a small office section for a manufacturer’s family in Sinsheim, near Heidelberg, was to be planned. The client had explicitly asked for a solar house.

Landscape
Sinsheim is situated in a low-mountain region to the east of the Upper Rhine valley. The gently rolling landscape flows to the rhythm of hill and valley. Wooded hilltops and meadows with single fruit trees are followed by villages and towns in the valleys.

Location, Context
The plot is situated in a detached family house estate, principally with buildings from the 1970ties. The monotony of the buildings in the area is due to the structure of the development scheme in force for this area. The guidelines for planning the site lacked imagination, resulting in a boring uniformity of the buildings. The estate houses have no relationship to the location. The plot in question is a remaining area below a hilltop with a slight incline on a southern slope.

Building Structure
We decided on a rectangular building constructed in an east-westerly direction. The building opens to the south along its length.

Zoning
The principle for the division of areas is to locate the service rooms such as bathrooms, toilet, kitchen, dressing room, utility room and cloakroom on the northern side. Bedrooms and reception rooms open to the southern side and are situated on one level. The interior zoning is supplemented by an exterior zoning. The passage to the garden becomes an interspace which can be covered alternatively with an opaque, transparent or translucent building element or used as an open patio.
A further distribution of functions follows a vertical layering. The upper floor is the family living area whereas the ground floor is divided into service rooms used only occasionally such as the offices, company archives, guest flat, gym, wine-cellar and utility rooms.

Structure (Greenhouse Principle)
A greenhouse consists of a solid base and a transparent covering.

The ground floor of the residential house is the solid part of the building. It is visibly placed above the relief of the earth’s surface. The relief of the landscape rebounds off the rising, solid outer walls.
On top of the base is the “covering” in the form of the upper floor. The living areas are put together in a unity under the vaulted roof “skin”.

Section
The section through the building shows the way to develop a solar house. The roof areas create vaulted shapes with different radii. The height of the eaves lines of the roof change on the northern side. The curve springs from the earth. The ridge height represents the highest point of the vertex curve. The vertex defines the vertical maximum façade opening towards the sun. The building opens on its southern side. On the other side of the vertex the significance of the roof area arc changes. Beyond the ridge the overhanging roof area protects the building from the summer sun while carrying the active solar technology.
Building Temperature
Similar to the constant ground temperature the ground floor is the part of the building with even temperature. Compared to the outdoor temperatures the constant room temperatures are cool in summer and warm in winter. Aspirated air is precooled or preheated in order to balance the temperature of the upper floor.
The covering of the upper floor is the area of the building with alternating temperature. Following the example of nature the covering controls the heat balance of the building. Natural ventilation prevents overheating of the inner living areas during the summer; overcooling in winter is balanced by conventional heating engineering. Solar heat recovery during sunshine in the in-between-seasons and winter, lower the energy consumption of the building.
