Task
The upper floor flat of an existing building of the 1950ties, housing a pharmacy on the ground floor, was to be extended by adding a large living room. We developed a building on pillars.

The Crossroads
The street “Am Vierrutenberg” is gently sloping and runs between fields and detached and semi-detached houses towards the north. The end plot points towards the corner because of an oblique-angled crossroads. However, the building to be extended has no physical relationship to the crossroads, but represents merely the continuation of the houses standing on a line along the street. We decided to extend the old building at its northern side and to define one of the four crossroads cornerpoints with it. Two further corners are not defined and filled with necessity architecture. The fourth corner opens onto the view previously described. The extension signals the beginning of urban architectural developments at these crossroads.

The Site
The plot is situated in a characteristic suburban area in the north of Berlin, nestling in a gently rolling landscape at the edge of the “Tegeler Fließ”. An open view westwards over field and meadow is a surprising scenic event in the dense suburban belt of Berlin.

The tiered Terraces
The “crazy” habit of the house owner to enjoy the sunset on summer evenings from the roof of his house, stimulated the idea of building a new structure in such a way that one can walk out on all levels. The tiered terraces step down to the garden at the back.

The Function of Viewing
The solid building structure is resolved across the pointed corner of the rhombus through a studio window. The view is westwards across the solid, overhanging roof. The view from the inside to the outside is intensified and the “depth of field” of the horizon is increased.

The plastic Building Structure
The basic form of the extension is a rhombus thus allowing the building to point towards the crossroads and so follow the cut of the plot. The space, based on this shape, is approximately 1/3 outside area (terrace to the garden side) and 2/3 living area. A narrow connection element, vertically glazed, is situated at the junction of the rhombus (new building) and the oblong (old building). On the ground floor the connection element renews the old entrance. Visible pillars, wall and roof areas are made of exposed concrete with smooth shuttering. All the plastic components which give the building its shape are integrated cast pieces.

Concluding Remark
The plasticity of the building can only be experienced by moving around it. Seen from an acute angle by a pedestrian coming from south, the extension appears behind the old building as a vertical line with a horizontal beam. Only on taking the longer route around the building can one guess the real shape of the pillared structure with its emphasis on the sharp corner. The rhombus as the basic shape is clearly visible only at the point where the pedestrian passes the acute angle of the building and also gains, for a moment, a view onto the vertical wall. The creation of the whole building structure, made of positive and negative areas, can be experienced from behind the solid side of the building, in the last glimpse across the garden side from the footpath of the Benekendorfstraße.
